While pressure cooker journalism certainly puts a strain on journalists, this may not be avoidable. After all, this is what readers are demanding these days. They want immediacy. Unfortunately, smaller newspapers have been sluggish in their ability to catch up with this change, continuing to put out publications weekly, while their readers want hyper-local news hyper-fast.

And in the end, I don't think that this has to kill journalists. They just have to find a flexible compromise. Most local newsrooms gather information throughout the week anyway. They just need to learn to publish instantly over the web rather than waiting till the end of the week to put it on paper.
