Yeah… This seems a bit utopian. If a tree falls in the forest and everyone tweets about it, that doesn’t prove causation. Tell me, what tweet felled the Soviet Union? More ominously, have we forgotten the famous Haystack episode that everyone was so in love with during the Iranian protests of 2009? It was a software that was widely touted that could “disguise” your location from pryig authoritiesl. Too bad it turns out that it didn’t and thousands of people in Iran were put at risk. Also, don’t forget that the Iranian government used facebook in order to track protesters and used facial recognition to identify and arrest people. Technology works both ways, folks! Email mailing lists from Columbia University were used at Iranian trials of protesters and those people were jailed and probably tortured.
Sorry Iggy but as Vladimir Ilyich Ulyanov, better known as Lenin remarked “The Capitalists will sell us the rope with which we will hang them.”
The internet has been to valuable to shut down since 1997. (Do you really think you can run a government or a global enterprise without it?)

If indeed a tree falls in the forest and everybody tweets about it, that means that you can’t use the past as a guide for thinking that you can chop it down without anybody knowing about it.
If people cared about the tree, you should assume that actions taken against that tree will be met with immediate resistance.
Cute response msb, now care to talk about how the Iranians are using social media and face tracking to stamp out dissent? How the Syrians are currently mobbing all forums on the conflict there and shouting down all others? How China infliltrated google servers to get the names and addresses of dissidents. So sad that this “force for good” can be a tool of horrible evil. Sorry, no utopia here! Technology works both ways!
